The worst thing about apples repair shop is that you will take your MacBook for a battery replacement and they’ll tell you that you need £1000 worth of replacements because of “issues” but all you asked for was a battery replacement.. AND THEN you say that you don’t want to fix it afterwards that can charge you anything from £100 to £500 for a “professional diagnostic” which is stupid

    4. Alexander Windh

Can we just stop supporting these types of companies? It doesn't seem to hard to fix.

    5. Andrew Higdon

You missed a massive point on the car ownership. We can’t do anything we want with it. You mentioned driving on the road. Driving on public roads is a privilege. Not a right. And because of that, there are rules or laws to follow, to make lots and lots and lots of money, while doing almost nothing.

    6. Fox Mind

I just discovered this channel and I am IN LOVE with the format. Really interesting, in-depth, and articulate. Wish I found you sooner!

Not about repair, but about corporate control: Remember when Ferrari sued Deadmou5 for wrapping HIS Ferrari?

    10. Erin Solo

A simple thing, if it doesn't have apple or tesla parts then it can't have their brand on that product, because if the phone or the car blasts off someday, it's doubtful that the owner even knows if it's because of the replaced item by some random industrial technician! Of course u "own" the product but u "don't own" the brand and if there is a performance issue then u'll complain about the brand and not a single item which u can't even be sure!!!!!

Everything's getting smaller and lighter and yet we can do less with our devices than we could 5 years ago. 5 years ago I could have a spare battery and a spare battery charger and carry it with me and replace in seconds when needed. Now I'd need a bunch of tools to replace a dying battery. Not okay. I'm okay with a slightly bulkier and heavier phone if I can do more with it.

    22. Aristides Tranquillini Neto

Ok, I usually don't comment on ARdevs videos, but this is an awesome topic. Regarding the safety argument, I honestly think it could be used in the company's disadvantage (considering Brazilian law, and I believe laws from many other countries, from what I studied). I can honestly see a court ruling that if a company goes that far to protect the product from the owner, if the owner succesfully makes a change to the product and there is an accident or something similar, the company should also be held liable, since they took it as their responsibility to "babysit" the owner. A simple analogy would be a website where you can leave comments. If the company evaluates the comments before they are published, if any comment generates a problem (such as being racist), the company could also be held liable, since it analyzed the comment and decided it was okay. That is one of the reasons companies try to not intervene that much in some aspects, even if technically the could, since this would help avoid liability.

    23. Kray Zee

The argument for the Tesla is stupid as hell - you can get into problems with the regular engine cars. Fire, explosions, death. But we just know how to work with it, so we hurt ourselves less.

    25. Aditya Rana

Finally MKBHD has started criticizing Apple.

    26. Jimmy D. Porter

Elon musk is so greedy, he cant see past his own hypocrisy. How you gonna say you don't want people to hurt themselves and yet want people to volunteer to die just to say you are the emperor of mars? Seems to me, down the road he is gonna start uploading car crashes into his vehicles just to make more money at the cost of his own fanboys lives. Anonymous, shut this clown down.

    27. Nicolas

Speaking about Right to repair you should do a fairphone review.

    28. Oscar Díaz

I understand that we want the ability to fix our own stuff but think about it, those tractors, tractors back in the 70s weren't as smart and efficient and probably much reliable as today, you can basically work in a farm and not get dirty with todays technology. Same deal with phones. I remember I could take my nokia apart, keyboard battery front case... you name it, but these phones were meant to be used for calls, text, use a calculator and play snake, todays phones requires lots of tech and software development which requires a complex set of components that lest be clear, not many people are familiar with.

    29. Metlha Rabodietso

    30. pro2go

U forgot to say that the companies block u from repair for money like selling 300 dollar glass to make u think to buy a new phone as its more worth it

    31. noplan724

I am sitting here waiting for the WWDC to beginn because I am interested in buying a MacBook. And I really want one, it is a nice piece of tech. However, the way Apple deals with customers behind their back and also with the repair-shops makes them so unsympathetic to me, that it actually would affect my user experience with one of their products while using it...

    32. Phantom Black

As right to repair gets harder , right to costumize is also taking a toll. Shout out to the Tesla pickup girl.

    33. gama mendez

RTR, is a fundamental to the foundation of tech growing. Here's an example, when old computers suck, they took them apart and try to build it better eventually created a much better computer.

    34. Rami Lejonhjärta

Its all about greed. Take away their money and they will turn against each other and some worst cases they will kill each other. That's good for the planet, less more scumbags breathing our air and the climate will heal itself.

    35. theIllitistPRO

WRONG. Tech isn't getting harder to repair. It's the software that the manufacturer adds to the individual chips that serial them to limited components and the bullishness to not release schematic information that is destroying right to repair. "Things are getting smaller and tighter specks in design." So what? Nobody is completely wrong to assume this is a valid reason on the surface, however it's not a reason at all. This is why people like Louis Rossman exist on the internet, to show this as fact. Given the right parts, tools and knowledge that's available all over the internet in videos and written documents anyone can do the job correctly. There should be no need to have to trace an entire board to fix a simple USB port, for example. With the strategy being implemented like it has we will be screwed out of having any rights at all when it comes to tech. Lobby Now, Right to repair.

    36. CyberVirtual

When I use the word "Proprietary" and every Apple and Tesla enthusiast just cant comprehend that this word exists so they replace it with the words "premium device". I cringe so fucken much when I engage with these morons!

We deserve the right to repair but all piece of tech also deserve to be well treated🥺 do you believe my 5 years old Jet black iPhone 7 Plus does not have a single scratch on it? It’s true...

    40. Andreas Bartel

I repair my own things that are not worth to be repaired by a pro. For example, VHS, Betamax and DVD-Recorders, the repair is more a hobby to me, like playing golf for others. Last week I replaced a battery of my iPhone 6s using an iFixit kit. Before that I replaced screens of my kids Neffos phones, got the screen from China via eBay. One reason why I can understand Apple is the following: Reputation! This might sound a little strange from a right to repair point of view, but what Apple's reputation destroys more are news like "iPhone explodes", "girl killed by iPhone in the bath". This is what the tabloids write in the headline. In the text you might find information of an unqualified repair, poor quality accessories or in the case of the girl that she was trying to remove the charger from the outlet, this stupid type A, and electrocuted herself by touching the contacts… But in the news, she was killed by an iPhone. Ok this has nothing to do with a faulty repair, it is an example. Sellers that offer used iPhone that are repaired with low quality parts, like LCD display, batteries without temperature sensor. Lookalike Apple chargers and so on do also no good to Apple’s reputation.

    41. Matt Blank

Well said! Thanks for putting this in a way that my parents can understand. I have to disagree with the bit about Tesla and safety though, this is all about control. People have been modifying cars since there were cars, and it's never been the manufacturer's responsibility to stop them.

Good information to make know to as many poeple as possible. BTW lookign at the future chalanges concering our environment there will need to be change. Europe is allready preparing legislation which will fore at least a decent minimum of repairability to guarantie a longer lifespan for elektronics and recycleability. as all the big company will like to do bussines in europe also min the coming year i deeply hope that will bring some positiv changes in the right direction.

    54. Rajil Jain

And apple talks about environment when they ditched the charger in box

      1. Monaleenian

@Julien Kauer Ah okay. Perhaps there was some incidental environmental benefit that resulted from not including the plug. Nothing wrong with wanting profit. Everyone does.

      2. Julien Kauer

@Monaleenian their excuse was the environment for this change but it doesn’t really make any sense they just want profit

      3. Monaleenian

What's wrong with that? It just allows them to sell the same products in different countries throughout the world. They don't have to worry about including a UK or US or European pinned charger. What does it have to do with the environment?

    55. s l

Yes software update is the new control. I had decided a long time back not to buy an apple or a Tesla product ever.. well will stick to their stocks!

The argument that most people need to be protected from themselves sounds valid until you realize that almost no one wants to fix or modify their own car. And the people who do want to fix or modify their own cars are the ones who learn to do it safely. I am one of the very few people that still fixes everything I can find enough info on. And when I do modify or repair something, I go bone deep to learn as much as possible about the thing I'm working on. I have $40k plus invested in tools and safety equipment. I just want companies to stay out of my way.

      1. ͨ̂ͫ͂҉̶̸̤̳̰̣͉̥͘͜

    62. John Smith

Of course if you have money you’ll most likely always pick to repair from the company you bought it from but some people don’t have money so cheap 3rd party parts is their only option

      1. Anon ymous

Is not that. Even if you have money it doesn't mean you can't get pissed for being taken advantage or have them throw away my data. If i take an iphone and ask them to fix it and despite them having the ability to change that small chip they don't let anyone else buy, they still change the whole motherboard etc and charge me almost as much as if i bought a new one and delete all my data. No matter how rich i am i will be pissed of being made a fool at when i know that my repair guy could have changed the chip for a 10th of the price and save my data if only they allowed him to buy it. Just because i have money it doesn't mean i will be pleased with wasting them and be taken advantage.

    63. Vladyslav Karasov

Wait what? You can't print fake money? Wtf?

      1. Vladyslav Karasov

@ ͨ̂ͫ͂҉̶̸̤̳̰̣͉̥͘͜ I mean the thing where your printer just won't let you. Printing real money involves a little more than your home printer and a sheet of paper, so why would that even be a thing?

      2. ͨ̂ͫ͂҉̶̸̤̳̰̣͉̥͘͜

What do you mean? Printing money is not allowed because that is illegal.

    64. I C

      Excellent

    65. superviewer

Thanks for talking about this. The truth is that we don't live in a world with real care about affortability, the environment and general reason. It is all about greed (growth) and control. Well, acutally just control cloaked as other aspects of this world. People are starting to slowly get it on the eve of way overdue. Again, thanks for addressing this.

    66. Karthikeyan Ojash

I had an iPhone 6 the screen broke and I went to a non authorised service centre to get is fixed cause an authorised one is expensive. Two months later my phone stops working and I ended buying another phone.

    70. Chinmay Bapat

Finally a good video! Control = Apple. You won me just with that. Next time don't hype and praise them for every poor and gimmicky thing they do. They don;t do any good for the tech world. Nothing! The charger fiasco being the latest great big harm from Apple to the world!

    71. NewAx_Productions

this is why i own an international samsung, easy to repair myself and im not using the samsung OS that comes with the phone.

    72. MomomeshTV

it's easy to see right to repair stems for lack of education in a broader sense, young Engineers that graduated from Universities these days can't even fix up their own homes manually, you might argue that their time is worth more elsewhere but that's what the new culture is. Just look at the car Manuals in the early stages where it even teaches you how to fix stuff in the cars, now you see Warning labels warning us not to EAT soap!? WTF?! What's the use of knowledge on your fingertips when most of the knowledge (by googling) are used for winning arguments and feeding ego? Where's the caring and goodness that use to be?

    73. Vladimir Sviridov

Elon couldn't give a rats ass about your safety, its money that's in question here

      1. Monaleenian

He'll make less money if his cars have a reputation for being unsafe.

    74. American Nomad News

There will be a point where the repairability will reach an intractable peak and drive a trend to begin increasing the repairability while increasing the sophistication of the technology. Only one last thing over complicating things it's not always improving them.

    75. American Nomad News

She's totally right no one should live in fear after buying a product and then modifying that product to no harm to the rest of society to their enjoyment and to improved use of the product.

    76. Shac kun

    77. Sebastian Reitz

I like that you work together with others to inform us and help us to make the world a better place. And I really like that you invited Louis :-)

    78. classydays43

Another thing that crossed my mind is reverse-engineering. Tesla gets away with making a machine that is unique in its class, and the tech in there is unique to that company. If you can repair it, then you can build a replica, and the ability to do that could be a reason why companies are so restrictive when it comes to repairing stuff. If you think about Apple with their touch displays, that technology would have been unique to them for a long time before others caught up which would have given them a monopoly on those things and they would have always been ahead, but their first iPhone was repairable such that a company like Samsung could replicate the technology and make their own version. I'm pretty sure they were in a court dispute for years over this. So someone like Louis Rossman might want to repair things from a business perspective, but someone more nefarious might use the right to repair to steal a company's hard work and sell it as their own. We see this a lot in China with knockoff versions of everything. I do believe we should have the right to repair things, but it's something worth thinking about.

We need good legislation..... There's the problem. There is no one in the government that knows about tech, or would care enough to learn, to write a good bill. They go with who lines their pockets, and that's big tech. Ted Cruz, besides being a dick, is not going to vote on something that the people ask him to do when he can get $100,000+ to sign on to a bill that is going to continue making him money. If dumb-dumb Pelosi was told she would have major donors like apple, and get paid the same, she is probably not turning that down either. And by probably, I mean, if it's going to guarantee help in her next election....yeah, she gonna go it. But that's what happens. Look at all these old morons trying to write legislation for subjects/issues they know nothing about and couldn't be bothered to learn. They're not going to spend their day researching it, that's what aide's are for. They give them the important points and what the "poles" say....(anyone ever gotten a call for something like that you care about, or one ever at all?)....so who the fuck knows what information they're getting and from who. There will not be any good legislation from Washington on any issue like this when they can get paid.

Tesla shouldn't be the arbiter of what's safe if I'm paying for a product. The can't teach adults common sense, so using that as a reason to limit freedoms with a vehicle is absurd. There should just be an addendum on purchase that the owner has responsibility for any consequences of their own work or mods

I changed my battery on my iPhone 11. Apart from the battery health, the battery is 2X better than the apple one. Now looking at the quality of MacBooks I stay away from them. The problem is with people not with the companies. I heard that Apple wants to push an update to brick the phones if you change a component in it. That will be the day when I will smash my Iphones in from of an apple store and throw them inside the shop
